Military asserts dominance in Khartoum – DW – 28.03.2025

The Sudanese army has declared complete control over the capital city of Khartoum after regaining the presidential palace from rival paramilitary forces a week ago. Nabil Abdullah, an army spokesperson, stated that forces have fully eliminated the remaining presence of the Rapid Support Forces in Khartoum. The army’s chief, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, announced that the city was “free” from the RSF while speaking from the reclaimed palace.

Although Khartoum has been retaken by the government forces, the situation does not signify an immediate end to the ongoing civil war that has lasted for two years. Government forces have made advances in central Sudan, but the RSF still controls vast areas of the country, especially in the western Darfur region.

In response to the recent surge in violence, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced plans to intensify diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the war in Sudan.
