Myanmar’s military government plans to hold an election in December or January, according to state media. The junta’s chief, Min Aung Hlaing, assured that the voting process would be “free and fair” and stated that 53 political parties have already submitted their lists for participation. This election will be the first since the military overthrew Myanmar’s democratically elected government in February 2021. Myanmar has faced ongoing turmoil following the ousting of Aung San Suu Kyi and her National League for Democracy (NLD) party, which won the 2020 election but was accused by the military of election fraud. The junta has long promised to restore civilian rule through new elections but has repeatedly extended a state of emergency. The military takeover led to a protest movement that evolved into an armed uprising, resulting in the deaths of nearly 6,400 civilians and over 28,700 arrests according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners.
