China is welcoming world leaders as they arrive in Tianjin for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, which begins on Sunday. The two-day gathering will bring together leaders from over 20 countries, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Egyptian Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly. The SCO comprises China, India, Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus, with 16 more countries affiliated as observers or “dialogue partners”. China’s President Xi Jinping started receiving foreign leaders on Saturday. Modi’s visit to China is his first since 2018, and his talks with Xi come as the neighbors show tentative signs of improving relations after a 2020 border clash. Putin is expected to discuss the Ukraine conflict with Erdogan and hold talks with Iran’s Pezeshkian about Iran’s nuclear program. The summit will be followed by a military parade in Beijing marking 80 years since the end of World War II.
