A devastating fire at a nightclub in the North Macedonian town of Kocani on Sunday morning resulted in the deaths of at least 51 people and left numerous others injured.
It was reported that over a thousand mostly young individuals were in attendance at a concert by the popular hip-hop duo DNK when the fire erupted, according to the state news agency MIA.
Interior Minister Pance Toskovski stated that according to their current information, 51 individuals have lost their lives and over 100 are injured and being treated in hospitals in Stip, Kocani, and Skopje.
SDK, an online media outlet, noted that the fire broke out at 3 a.m. (0200 GMT), and cited rescue sources as saying that more than 100 people sustained injuries during the blaze.
Photos and videos on social media showed the fire rapidly spreading to the club’s ceiling and roof, which was identified as the “Pulse” discotheque. Speculation suggests that pyrotechnic devices may be responsible for starting the fire.
Kocani is situated approximately 100 kilometers (60 miles) east of the capital city of Skopje, with a population of around 30,000.
Please stay tuned for further updates.
