Number of fatalities increases due to quake as military government denies ceasefire – DW – 04/02/2025

The death toll from a massive earthquake in Myanmar has risen to 2,886 people, with an additional 4,639 injured and 373 missing, according to state-run television in Myanmar. A man was rescued alive five days after the earthquake, thanks to the efforts of a joint Burmese-Turkish rescue team.

The humanitarian situation is becoming increasingly dire, with calls growing for Myanmar’s military junta to allow more international aid. China stated that it has provided cash aid through its embassy in Naypyitaw, as many countries maintain a diplomatic presence in Myanmar.

The United Nations is urging the military dictatorship to put a halt to hostilities with rebels in response to the 7.7 magnitude quake, but reports indicate that the military has continued to launch strikes in recent days, even with a partial truce agreement in place.

UN special envoy Julie Bishop called for both sides to prioritize the protection of civilians, including aid workers, and the delivery of life-saving assistance.

The humanitarian crisis in Myanmar is deepening days after the quake, as seen in the embedded video.

In Thailand, the death toll from the earthquake had risen to 22 as of Wednesday, with the damage mostly localized to one construction site in Bangkok. The government in Beijing has urged all Chinese construction companies to abide by local laws, as questions arise about whether the Chinese-led project was following safety guidelines.
