Reports suggest that up to 100 individuals have been injured, with Reuters and AFP indicating that approximately 60 people have been admitted to hospitals for treatment of burns, breathing problems, and other injuries.
The incident took place near Kuala Lumpur, leading to the evacuation of residents from their homes.
Firefighters report that the blaze damaged at least 49 houses.
Understanding the Fire
The fire originated from a gas pipeline leak spanning about 500 meters (1,600 feet), according to Selangor state fire officials.
The valve for the affected pipeline has since been closed off.
Witnesses noted that the blaze was visible from several kilometers away.
Seven individuals had their homes catch fire and required rescue efforts.
Mohd Najwan Halimi, the chairman of Selangor Disaster Management Committee, informed state news agency Bernama that people were trapped in houses within the village of Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru and ongoing rescue operations are in place.
A local resident remarked to The Star newspaper, “All of a sudden, we heard a loud bang and then there was chaos. We left the house immediately and saw others doing the same.”
The fire occurred during Eid celebrations, marking the conclusion of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
