Peruvian Agriculturalist Takes Legal Action Against German Energy Conglomerate

Originally from Huaraz in Peru, Saul Luciano Lliuya grows crops during summer and leads tourists up the Andes in winter. However, international attention has shifted to him due to a lawsuit against RWE, the principal energy company in Germany. The trial happening in Hamm involves Lliuya claiming that RWE’s environmental damage has made his house susceptible to danger from a potentially overflowing glacial lake. This lake, situated above his village, has seen a 34-fold increase in water level from 1990 to 2010. A spike in temperatures and loss of permafrost also heightens the risk of significant rock or ice chunks falling into the lake, threatening Lliuya’s house and 50,000 other people in the area. The Peruvian Andes were hit by a devastating flood in 1941 that led to about 1,800 fatalities. Additionally, recent research has concluded that the glacier’s melting near Huaraz is attributable to climate change, which affects 0.47% of climate-damaging emissions since industrialization began, with RWE being responsible for a portion of this. Lliuya is thus pushing for RWE’s contribution in funding protective measures against this kind of disaster. Recent simulations have shown that…
