Polish military intercepts drones following Russian intrusion into airspace – Deutsche Welle – October 9, 2025

On September 10, 2025, Poland’s armed forces reported that its airspace was repeatedly breached by unidentified drone-like objects while Russia was conducting strikes on Ukraine. A military operation is currently underway to identify and neutralize these objects. Polish and NATO allied aircraft have been seen operating in the Polish airspace. The at-risk regions include Podlaskie, Mazowieckie, and Lublin.

Several hours prior, Ukraine’s air force had issued air raid alerts for most of Ukraine, including western regions of Volyn and Lviv that share a border with Poland.

Due to “unplanned military activity related to ensuring state security,” four Polish airports, including Chopin Airport in Warsaw, were closed Tuesday night into Wednesday. Reuters reported this information, citing notices posted on the US Federal Aviation Administration’s website. The other closed airports are Rzeszow–Jasionka Airport in southeast Poland, Warsaw Modlin Airport, and Lublin Airport. No official confirmation regarding the airport closures has been provided by the military.

Poland has remained on high alert since a stray Ukrainian missile struck a southern Polish village in 2022, resulting in two deaths.
