The European Union Force (EUFOR) announced on Friday that it will temporarily expand its peacekeeping presence in Bosnia following the country’s top court suspension of separatist laws enacted by Bosnian Serb authorities. The decision aims to assist Bosnia and Herzegovina in the interest of all citizens and maintain security and stability in the country. Bosnia’s Constitutional Court previously suspended a series of laws proposed by Serb leader Milorad Dodik, which sought to undermine the authority of the federal police and judiciary in the Serb-controlled part of the country known as the Republika Srpska. Dodik, who was sentenced to a year in prison and banned from politics for six years, stated that he does not recognize Bosnia’s judiciary. Tensions in Bosnia and Herzegovina have risen due to these disputed laws and the country’s ethnically divided status, with the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warning that Dodik’s actions threaten security and stability in the region. However, Moscow is supporting Dodik’s policies, with Russian President Vladimir Putin expressing solidarity with the Bosnian Serb president.
