Germany’s Social Democrats (SPD) and Greens are likely to maintain their coalition in Hamburg after a regional election on Sunday, according to preliminary official results. The SPD remained the largest party with 33.5% of the votes, down from 39.2% in 2020. The Christian Democrats (CDU) gained ground, coming in second with 20%, while the Greens secured their third-place position with 18.5%. Additionally, the Left Party reached a significant milestone by securing 11% of the vote for the first time in Hamburg. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) also made gains, reaching 8% compared to 5.3% in the last state election. Voter turnout was higher than the previous election in 2020. The SPD’s performance in Hamburg’s election came under scrutiny after the party suffered its worst nationwide result in federal elections last week.
