Prime Minister of Denmark Asserts Infeasibility of Country Annexation – DW -April 4, 2025

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of Denmark refused to entertain President Donald Trump’s repeated calls for the United States to assume control over Greenland. She stressed the issue transcends Greenland and Denmark, affecting the international order established across the Atlantic over generations. Speaking at a press conference in Greenland flanked by the territory’s incoming and outgoing prime ministers, she argued against the idea of annexing another country, even if security concerns are cited as a reason.

Greenland, though part of Denmark, has self-governance over its domestic affairs; foreign policy and defense remain under Danish jurisdiction. Trump’s interest in Greenland is driven by concerns over Russian and Chinese threats in the Arctic region and the area’s rich natural resources. The dispute has drawn global attention, with Denmark’s soon-to-be Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, emphasizing the importance of unity between Denmark and Greenland in the face of external pressures.

Frederiksen also outlined Denmark’s commitment to enhanced security measures in the Arctic, including the deployment of new Arctic ships, long-range drones, and satellite technology. She extended an invitation to the U.S. to collaborate with Denmark, a NATO ally, to bolster Arctic security. This declaration comes shortly after a visit by U.S. Vice President JD Vance, whose remarks criticizing Denmark’s efforts to secure Greenland sparking a diplomatic controversy, with Frederiksen responding that Vance’s depiction of Denmark was “not fair.”
