The network’s president and CEO, Stephen Capus, believes they have a strong case and that withholding the funds identified by Congress is against the law. Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty News is an anti-communist broadcasting network established in 1950 to target people in the Soviet Union. It has since expanded to 27 languages and plays an important role in providing credible information to countries without a free or independent press in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, the Caucasus, and the Middle East. Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty lost its funding when Trump signed an order to disassemble the US Agency for Global Media, which oversees RFE/RL as well as international broadcaster Voice of America. The network has received support from European leaders and the Czech Republic is leading efforts by the European Union to preserve it. An EU foreign policy chief suggests the network played a crucial role as a democracy beacon for Estonians during the Soviet era, though funding alternatives are still uncertain.
