According to Germany’s GFZ for geosciences, the earthquake, with a preliminary reported magnitude of 7.3, had its epicenter in neighboring Myanmar and occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a slightly higher magnitude of 7.7 for the earthquake.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damages. However, witnesses described how people fled into the streets of Bangkok after feeling the powerful tremors. Water was also seen splashing out of swimming pools.
Duangjai, a resident of Chiang Mai, a popular tourist city, shared her experience with the French AFP news agency, saying she quickly escaped the building in her pajamas after feeling the tremors. The earthquake was felt across northern and central Thailand.
