Revoting takes place following nullification of election – DW – 05/04/2025

People went to the polls in Romania on a Sunday morning for a re-run of the presidential election, which was annulled late last year. The election was annulled due to irregularities in the financing and organization of the leading campaign, which included the activation of thousands of previously inactive social media accounts. Romanian public prosecutors also opened an investigation into the winning candidate, George Gheorghecu, who is banned from standing again. The favorites in the election are George Simion from the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians party and incumbent Bucharest mayor Nicusor Dan, although the decision to annul the election has been criticized by the US and Russia. Romania has supported Ukraine since the Russian invasion, providing military equipment and using its Black Sea ports, but this has prompted a right-wing populist backlash.
