Marine Le Pen invoked Martin Luther King’s struggle for civil rights as she gathered her far-right National Rally (RN) party following her conviction for embezzlement. This conviction led to her being banned from public office. Ahead of the rally, Le Pen urged her supporters to follow the example of King’s advocacy for nonviolence in the fight for equal rights. Le Pen has stated that she will appeal the ruling. Jordan Bardella, the current head of Le Pen’s RN, has been touted as the party’s next presidential candidate and said that the ruling against Le Pen would only boost support for the party. The French political left, including members of the hard-left France Unbowed party, also staged a counter-rally in Paris to protest against the far right.
