In respone to the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, reactions in Russia were ones of approval and jubilation. The Kremlin also expressed support for Trump’s decision to halt military aid to Ukraine. Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, wrote on social media that Trump had told Zelenskyy the truth – that the Ukrainian government is playing with the third world war. The accusations were welcomed in Moscow, with the Kremlin viewing Zelenskyy as a threat to the world. Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, stated that Trump’s decision to suspend military aid was a positive development that could lead to a peace process in Ukraine.European leaders quickly expressed their support for Zelenskyy and Ukraine, with the EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposing a new defense plan. However, questions remain about the effectiveness of such measures without US assistance. Russian political experts and the Western intelligence community are attempting to understand Putin’s strategy – whether it is a strategic pause or a genuine pursuit of peace. While some Russians embrace the potential for improved relations between the US and Russia, others remain cautious and skeptical of Trump’s motives.
