A riot at the Taxpan prison in the Mexican state of Veracruz resulted in seven deaths and 11 injuries, according to regional authorities. The violence commenced on Saturday due to prisoners’ dissatisfaction with extortion and abuse by members of the Grupo Sombra criminal organization. The Department of Public Security of Veracruz confirmed the incident and stated that police and security forces were deployed to restore order. The prison was found to be overcrowded with 778 inmates in June, exceeding its designed capacity of 735. According to a 2012 report by Mexico’s human rights commission, six out of ten Mexican prisons are controlled by either prison gangs or drug cartels. The Grupo Sombra organization first emerged in 2017 when its members handed out frozen turkeys and soda to residents in Veracruz for Christmas. They have recently been linked to the murder of a 65-year-old retired teacher in July. Organized by: Rana Taha
