In Manhattan, New York City, a shooting incident occurred at an office tower, resulting in the deaths of a police officer and at least three civilians. According to officials, the shooter is also deceased and the situation has been contained. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but it is reported that the shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The high-rise building targeted by the shooter is home to several prominent financial firms, including Blackstone and KPMG, as well as the headquarters of the National Football League (NFL). At a press conference, New York Mayor Eric Adams stated that five people were shot, including the perpetrator. He emphasized the senseless nature of the act and the loss of innocent lives, including a member of the New York City Police Department.
Officer Didarul Islam, a three-and-a-half year veteran of the department born in Bangladesh, was among the victims. Three other civilians lost their lives, and a male survivor is currently in critical condition. The suspect has been identified as Shane Tamura of Nevada, with a documented mental health history. Police are still investigating the motive and reasons behind targeting the particular location.
The shooting occurred during rush hour at around 6:30 pm local time. The area is popular with tourists and business visitors. The front-runner in the race for New York mayor, Zohran Mamdani, expressed his heartbreak over the incident.
