A violent incident took place at the bustling Pearl Street pedestrian mall in Boulder, Colorado, which is known for attracting both tourists and students from the University of Colorado Boulder. This incident on a Sunday resulted in multiple injuries, according to statements from the local police.
FBI Director Kash Patel announced an investigation into what he termed a “targeted terror attack.” In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he confirmed the FBI agents were already on the scene alongside local law enforcement and promised to share updates as the situation develops.
This attack happened near a demonstration in support of Israeli hostages being held captive in Gaza, which may suggest a motive behind the violence. The FBI later identified the suspect as a 45-year-old male who was shouting “Free Palestine” while using explosive devices during the attack. Six individuals aged between 67 and 88 suffered injuries and were treated in hospitals, and the suspect himself sustained injuries. Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn stated confidence in having the sole suspect in custody.
US officials including Secretary of State Marco Rubio denounced the attack and affirmed the commitment to combat terrorism within the United States. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called the situation “horrifying” and urged a stand against antisemitism.
Israeli officials and the country’s ambassador to the United Nations also reacted, expressing their condemnation and calling it an act of terrorism. The incident underlines a growing concern over violence targeting the Jewish community and comes a week after a shooting outside the Israeli embassy in Washington where a “Free Palestine” slogan was also invoked by the perpetrator.
This attack is keeping the Boulder community and the wider globe on high alert over rising tensions and the increasing frequency of politically motivated violence.
