Fire breaks out at Ukrainian government building

An administrative government building in the Pechersky district of Kyiv caught fire after an overnight Russian air attack on Kyiv, said Timur Tkachenko, the head of the military administration of the Ukrainian capital.

Kyiv mayor Vitaliy Klitschko also reported the fire on Telegram, adding that firefighters were working on the scene.

Associated Press reporters saw a plume of smoke rising from the roof of Kyiv’s cabinet of ministers building, but it was not immediately clear if the smoke was the result of a direct hit, which would mark an escalation in Russia’s air campaign.

Russia has so far avoided targeting government buildings in the city center.

Ukrainian drones spark fire at oil refinery, says Russia

Ukraine’s overnight drones launched at Russia sparked a fire at the Iisky oil refinery in the southern city of Krasnodar, local Russian officials said on Sunday.

“One of the processing units caught fire. The blaze, covering several square meters, was quickly extinguished,” the officials wrote on the Telegram messaging app.

They reported no casualties and added that fire and rescue teams were working on site.

Russia’s overnight drone attacks kill at least two in Kyiv

A series of Russian strikes across Ukraine overnight left at least two people dead and several others injured, Ukrainian officials reported.

In Kyiv, falling debris from downed drones started fires on top of a 16-story residential building and two nine-story buildings, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko.

Tymur Tkachenko, the head of Kyiv’s city military administration, said that among the dead was a one-year-old child whose body was uncovered from the rubble by rescuers.

According to Reuters, witnesses heard a series of explosions shaking the Ukrainian capital city, which they believe were air defense units conducting operations.

Explosions were also reported in the cities of Odesa, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, and Kryvyi Rih.

Poland, which is Ukraine’s neighbor to the west, scrambled its fighter jets during Russia’s air raid to protect its own air space.

Russia currently occupies about 20% of Ukraine’s territory. Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to reach a ceasefire and achieve lasting peace have stalled.

Ukrainian officials reported dozens of injuries from overnight strikes, emphasizing that its neighbor continues to deliberately target civilian areas.

Despite US President Donald Trump’s initial efforts to promote peace, Russia’s ongoing attacks on civilians have hindered progress.

Meanwhile, several of Ukraine’s European allies, led by France, have pledged troops for a postwar security force. Germany is still considering its options.
