A football fan passed away after falling from the stands during the Nations League final match between Portugal and Spain in Munich on Sunday, according to the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).
The supporter fell from the central tier into the media area below during the first period of extra time as tensions rose among the fans.
Emergency services responded promptly, but unfortunately, the fan could not survive their injuries.
A UEFA spokesperson confirmed the tragic loss of a fan during the match.
After the match, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente expressed his condolences, saying, “I would like to offer my sympathies as a fan lost their life today. My condolences go out to the family.”
Portugal coach Roberto Martinez shared his condolences, calling it “heartbreaking news.”
The exact circumstances surrounding the fall are still unclear.
In the game, Portugal found themselves trailing twice but managed to equalize both times, with captain Cristiano Ronaldo scoring the second equalizer. Ultimately, Portugal triumphed 5-3 on penalties.
