Tens of thousands of supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro held rallies across the country on Sunday, days before a Supreme Court ruling on his trial for an alleged coup attempt. Demonstrators demanded amnesty for those involved in the January storming of government buildings in Brasília. São Paulo Governor Tarcisio de Freitas, a Bolsonaro ally, criticized Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. The Supreme Court trial against Bolsonaro and seven co-defendants, including former ministers and senior military officers, will enter a decisive stage. If found guilty, Bolsonaro would become the first former president in Brazil’s history convicted of attempting a coup and could face over 40 years in prison. Similar rallies took place in Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia, while opponents staged counter-protests in several cities.
