Tesla, owned by Elon Musk, faces $243 million fine for crash incident – DW – 08/02/2025

A Miami jury ruled on Friday that Tesla was responsible for a fatal crash in 2019 and ordered the electric vehicle manufacturer to compensate the family of the deceased victim and her injured partner with $243 million (€209 million). The court found Tesla accountable for the incident because its Autopilot feature failed to function properly. The driver’s phone had fallen to the floor of the vehicle and he was distracted while using the Autopilot system. Tesla, however, plans to appeal the decision and claims that the driver is solely responsible for the crash. The firm asserts that Autopilot is a driver-assist feature and not a fully autonomous driving system. Tesla’s stock fell 1.83% after the verdict, marking the first time the company has faced significant damages due to its Autopilot functions in a court of law.
