Germany, the United States, Australia, and the United Nations agencies have strongly condemned the forced deportation of at least 40 Uyghurs to China, where they face potential human rights violations. The Uyghurs, a Turkic-speaking Muslim minority from China’s northwestern Xinjiang province, have fled China since 2014 to escape widespread human rights abuse. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, stated that the forced deportation violates international law’s principles against returning individuals to countries where they may face serious human rights abuses, such as the UN Convention Against Torture. China and Thailand defended the repatriation, claiming it was in line with both countries’ laws, and that China assured proper treatment for the individuals. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International warn that the deportees are at risk of torture, forced disappearance, and detention.
