European leaders have shown their support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy following a confrontation with United States President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance at the White House. Zelenskyy traveled to Washington to sign a critical minerals deal with Trump and to seek continued US support for Ukraine’s fight against Russia, which invaded Ukraine just over three years ago. However, the meeting ended abruptly after Trump and Vance accused Zelenskyy of disrespecting the United States as he sought security assurances to protect against any future invasion attempts by Russia.
Meeting with European allies prompted concerns about what kind of partner the United States could continue to be. European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated that the free world needs a new leader, and that it is up to Europeans to take on this challenge. European leaders praised Zelenskyy following the clash and expressed support for Ukraine. Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke with both the Ukrainian and US presidents immediately after their heated conversation in the Oval Office, and stated that he is looking forward to hosting international leaders, including President Zelenskyy, on Sunday.
Leaders from various countries expressed their support for Ukraine, while Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, a Trump ally with close ties to Russia, backed the US president. Hungarian support for Trump could raise concerns over the EU’s ability to provide some forms of aid to Ukraine that require unanimous approval from all 27 member states.
