The search comes to an end following the discovery of the bodies of five miners – DW – 08/04/2025

On Sunday, rescue teams located the body of the last missing miner at Chile’s largest copper mine, El Teniente, following a tunnel collapse caused by a 4.2 magnitude earthquake on Thursday. One person was initially killed, and nine were injured from the tremors and collapse. The cause of the quake remains under investigation. Rescue efforts involved digging through 24 meters underground to retrieve the bodies of the miners. Codelco, the state-run operator of the mine, faces international scrutiny as the mine’s safety measures come into question. Chile’s mining industry is considered one of the safest worldwide, with a low fatality rate in recent years.
