Three Decades Mark Croatia’s Independence Struggle – DW – May 08, 2025

Once a year, on August 5, the quiet town of Knin in Northern Dalmatia transforms into the epicenter of Croatia’s political life. The annual event commemorates the military operation “Oluja” (Storm) carried out from August 4 to 7, 1995, when Croatian forces recaptured the Krajina region, dealing a significant blow to Serbian control and marking a pivotal moment in the Bosnian War. The raising of a massive flag over Knin Fortress still symbolizes Croatian victory. However, the event is remembered with mixed emotions, as Operation Storm led to the forced displacement of many Serbs, with many crimes committed against Serbian civilians by Croatian forces. These crimes, while documented, saw little legal action, both domestically and internationally. The differing narratives surrounding Operation Storm reflect the complex legacy of the Yugoslav wars.
