Trump Advocates Debunked Tylenol-Autism Connection – DW – 23 Sept 2025

US President Donald Trump recently announced new health guidelines on vaccines and made an unfounded assertion that using acetaminophen, also known as Tylenol in the US, during pregnancy is associated with autism. However, no medical evidence supports this claim.

According to Trump, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would inform doctors that acetaminophen “may be linked” to an increased risk of autism, without providing any scientific proof for this recommendation.

What are Trump and RFK’s views on autism?

Health Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr (RFK) has long been committed to revealing the causes of autism and has pushed debunked theories linking vaccines to the condition. Trump and RFK have vowed to transform the country’s health agencies with the slogan “Make America Healthy Again.”

The US president stated, “Using Tylenol is not advisable.”

“Therefore, doctors are strongly advising women to restrict Tylenol use during pregnancy unless it’s medically necessary. For example, in situations of extremely high fever that you cannot tolerate,” he added.

Trump also falsely claimed that there are “regions in the world” that cannot afford the drug and thus “do not have autism.”

Tylenol company criticizes Trump’s autism comments

Kenvue, the parent company of Tylenol, expressed its strong disagreement with Trump’s remarks, stating that “solid scientific evidence clearly shows that taking acetaminophen does not cause autism.”

The company drew attention to scientific reviews conducted by multiple government regulators worldwide, including those previously published by the FDA.
