US President Donald Trump stated that he would consider pursuing a third presidential term, despite it being prohibited by the constitution. In a phone interview with NBC, he claimed that there are methods that allow for this possibility. Trump also mentioned that many people have asked him to run for a third term, reinforcing his belief that the 2020 election was rigged. NBC speculated that Vice President JD Vance could run for office and then handover to Trump. Trump agreed but did not provide any further details. He emphasized that plans for a third term would require a constitutional amendment and are still in the distant future.
The current law restricts presidents from serving more than two terms. Commentators raised concerns about Trump’s intention, viewing it as a threat to democracy. Democratic Congressman Daniel Goldman stated that Congress should oppose the idea if they believe in the constitution. Trump’s supporters, however, firmly believe in his chances of winning in 2028.
The two-term limit for US presidents has been in place since 1951. Before that, it was simply a tradition established by George Washington. Franklin Delano Roosevelt served as president for 12 years, seeking and winning a third and fourth term. Following Roosevelt’s death, the 22nd amendment was ratified, limiting presidential terms to two. This amendment came into effect in 1951. Two days after Trump’s inauguration, a Republican congressman introduced a resolution to amend the constitution, allowing Trump a third term. This resolution has been under consideration.
