The highly anticipated summit between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, has concluded without apparent tangible results. This outcome contradicts Trump’s claim that he would resolve the conflict in Ukraine within 24 hours of returning to the White House.
Putin may be satisfied with the red-carpet treatment he received from the US, after years of being diplomatically isolated due to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
No details were revealed during the press conference following the summit, and neither Putin nor Trump took any reporters’ questions. Trump only mentioned that “some headway” had been made, while Putin supported Trump’s stance that the Ukraine war would not have begun if Trump was the US leader at the time.
Trump mentioned that potential “land swaps” and security guarantees for Ukraine were discussed, though he stated that Ukraine must agree to such terms. Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian President, has ruled out ceding any territory to Russia.
Sanctions threatened by Trump before the summit, in response to Putin ignoring the US leader’s cease-fire deadline, have not been implemented. Since the summit, Trump has reached out to Zelenskyy and NATO leaders to inform them of the discussions.
