Columbia University faced with funding cut threat over policy changes demanded by the Trump Administration
The letter, sent by the Departments of Education, General Services Administration, and Health and Human Services, insists that Columbia place its Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies Department under “academic receivership” for at least five years.
Other requirements for Columbia include banning masks intended to hide the wearer’s identity or intimidate, adopting a new definition of anti-Semitism, and changing its disciplinary processes for students.
“Your immediate compliance with these essential measures is expected,” according to the letter.
Additionally, it was announced that $400 million in federal grants and contracts to the university have been canceled.
Columbia University has a 30-day window to address these government concerns.
The Trump Administration’s pressure on the university is in response to pro-Palestinian protests that took place at numerous US college campuses last spring, with Columbia being a focal point.
Simultaneously, the Department of Education announced investigations into 45 universities over complaints of race-based eligibility programs.
“This announcement is part of our expanding efforts to ensure universities are not discriminating against their students based on race and race-related perceptions,” stated US Secretary of Education Linda McMahon.
