US President Donald Trump recently announced new health guidelines related to vaccines and made an unsubstantiated claim linking the use of acetaminophen, also known as Tylenol, during pregnancy to autism. He suggested that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would inform doctors that acetaminophen “can be associated” with an increased risk of autism, without providing any medical evidence for such a recommendation.
Trump’s stance on this issue aligns with the views of Health Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr (RFK), who has spent years advocating for discredited claims that vaccines are linked to autism. Both Trump and RFK have pledged to overhaul the country’s health agencies with the slogan “Make America Healthy Again.”
During his announcement, Trump stated that “taking Tylenol is not good” and called for women to limit its use during pregnancy unless medically necessary, such as in cases of extremely high fever.
However, Trump also made a false claim that there are “parts of the world” where the drug is too expensive, resulting in a lack of autism in those regions.
In response, Tylenol’s parent company, Kenvue, released a statement expressing its disagreement with Trump’s comments, stating that scientific evidence clearly shows that taking acetaminophen does not cause autism. The company cited scientific reviews by various government regulators worldwide, including those published by the FDA.
