Turkish Student Freed from Detention to Continue Legal Fight

Rumeysa Ozturk, a PhD student at Tufts University in Massachusetts, has been released from a Louisiana immigration detention center and has vowed to pursue her legal battle.
Ozturk spent over six weeks in detention after being arrested in March by immigration officers near the university campus.
Her initial detainment followed the co-authoring of an editorial criticizing Tufts University for its response to student protests calling on the institution to acknowledge the Palestinian genocide, disclose its investments, and divest from companies linked to Israel.

Ozturk’s Determined Stand for Justice

Reflecting on her experience, Ozturk stated that she lost both her freedom and educational progress during a vital period in her doctoral studies, yet she remain grateful for the support received.
She reiterated her commitment to her case, expressing trust in the American justice system.
Ozturk’s release came on Friday, pending a ruling on her claim of unlawful detention, with US District Judge William Sessions finding her to be neither a flight risk nor a threat to the community.

Criticism of Detention as Punitive Measure

Ozturk’s legal team argues that her arrest and subsequent detention were unlawfully intended to punish her for exercising her First Amendment right to free speech and to discourage others from speaking out.
Upon her return to Massachusetts, Ozturk was supported by her legal team and two Democratic politicians who celebrated her courage and resilience.
It has been reported that since late March, over 1,000 international students in the United States have faced visa revocations or the termination of their legal status.
The Trump administration’s policies have been characterized by a hardline stance on pro-Palestinian activism, which is framed within broader efforts to combat anti-Semitism.
