At least two individuals were killed and 19 others sustained injuries after a Mexican Navy training sailing ship collided with the iconic Brooklyn Bridge during a promotional tour on Saturday. New York City Mayor Eric Adams stated that out of the 277 passengers on board, 19 were injured, two of which were in critical condition and two more succumbed to their injuries. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed sadness on social media over the loss of two crew members of the Cuauhtemoc Training Ship. The incident involved the tops of the ship’s three masts striking the city’s landmark bridge, causing partial collapse as the vessel moved along the East River. Adams confirmed that the Brooklyn Bridge did not suffer major damage and the New York transport department stated that there were no signs of structural damage to the bridge. The cause of the collision is currently under investigation. Eyewitness videos captured the masts snapping and partially collapsing on impact, with heavy traffic present on the bridge during the incident. The Cuauhtemoc, a barque built in 1982 with a mast height of 48.2 meters, had been on a training maneuver and suffered damage in the collision.
