On Thursday, British Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that NHS England would be abolished in a bid to reduce bureaucracy. This decision comes in response to increasing criticism of the National Health Service (NHS) due to its long waiting lists and medical scandals. Starmer argued that the current two layers of bureaucracy are “overstretched, unfocused, trying to do too much, doing it badly,” and called for the funds to be redirected towards nurses, doctors, operations, and GP appointments. He emphasized that his goal is to chop down bureaucracy, prioritize the needs of working people, and shift funds to the front line. In order to achieve this, Starmer plans to bring NHS management back under democratic control by eliminating the arms-length body, NHS England.
