UK Set to Impose Additional Sanctions Against Russia: DW, February 23, 2025

The United Kingdom will announce new sanctions against Russia on Monday, marking the three-year anniversary of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. According to UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, this also serves as an opportunity to increase pressure on Vladimir Putin’s Russia. Lammy plans to announce the largest package of sanctions against Russia since the early days of the war, aiming to weaken its military capabilities and reduce funding for the ongoing destruction in Ukraine. The UK has already sanctioned 1,900 individuals and organizations linked to Putin’s government.

The announcement coincides with US President Donald Trump’s shift in position, taking charge of ending the war between Russia and Ukraine. In recent weeks, Trump has sidelined Ukraine and its European supporters from talks with Moscow regarding the war. Lammy emphasized the need for Europe to intensify its support for Ukraine, stating that Europe must work alongside the US and other partners to achieve a just and sustainable peace, while making it clear that there can be no decision about Ukraine without Ukraine’s involvement.

The UK has also pledged to provide £3 billion ($3.78 billion, €3.61 billion) annually to Kyiv and is prepared to deploy UK troops as part of peacekeeping forces if necessary. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is scheduled to meet with Trump in Washington next week, amid hopes that he can bridge the growing divide between Europe and the US under Trump’s leadership.
