Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the need for his country’s partners to display the same resilience and strength against Russia as Ukraine does.
Speaking to European journalists after his meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, Zelenskyy particularly addressed the role of the United States in negotiations with Moscow in an effort to secure a ceasefire.
On whether the US would demonstrate the strength he spoke of, Zelenskyy said he hoped they would, adding “God bless they will.”
Regarding public support in the US, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the bipartisan backing Ukraine has received. However, he also pointed out that the US is under the influence of the Russian narrative, citing special adviser Steve Witkoff as an example whose statements he believes do not contribute to peace and could weaken American pressure on Russia.
Zelenskyy is hopeful about NATO membership for Ukraine, stating that it would be a strong security guarantee for Kyiv and that NATO could benefit from the Ukrainian army’s combat experience. He acknowledges this wouldn’t happen without US support and will be attending a security summit in Paris to discuss long-term security guarantees and military support for Ukraine.
Ultimately, Zelenskyy says that while his country is open to a comprehensive ceasefire, the Russians are not ready to negotiate without preconditions.
The Ukrainian leader also highlighted the issue of the children abducted by Russia since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in 2022. He stated that securing their return is a top priority in any ceasefire talks.
