What to know about the high-stakes Ukraine summit in London
Various European leaders met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in London to deliberate on Ukraine’s security amid growing tensions between Washington and its traditional Western allies.
European leaders reemphasized their commitment to support Ukraine against Russian forces, with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasizing that Ukraine’s security is “vital to the security of every nation here and many others too.”
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen underscored the necessity for a “massive surge” in European defense. She is set to introduce a plan to “re-arm” Europe in the coming days.
Starmer also announced a new £1.6 billion deal to supply thousands of advanced air defense missiles to Ukraine.
Several countries attending the London meeting expressed interest in joining the “coalition of the willing” peacekeeping force, which is currently backed by the UK and France. This coalition aims to send troops to Ukraine as security guarantees once a peace deal is reached.
