UN Allocates $110 Million to Offset International Aid Shortfall – DW – March 6, 2025

The United Nations has earmarked $110 million from its emergency fund to support international development projects. This financial package aims to address overlooked crises in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Sudan is set to receive a third of these funds to counteract the deleterious effects of nearly two years of civil war, marked by significant displacement and an escalating humanitarian crisis.

These funds, sourced from the UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund, are designed to bridge the gaps left by substantial cuts in foreign aid, primarily initiated by the United States.

In a move that has drawn attention to the pressing issue of shrinking foreign aid, the Donald Trump administration recently slashed nearly $60 billion worth of foreign aid grants, impacting over 90% of global projects funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID). Such cuts have had dire consequences, including the shutdown of essential health care and nutrition programs in countries like South Sudan.

Adding to the concern, the United Kingdom has also announced reductions in its international aid budget, amidst calls to increase defense spending.

UN Under-Secretary for Humanitarian Affairs, Tom Fletcher, has emphasized the harsh impact of these funding cuts on countries grappling with conflict, climate change, and economic instability, asserting that reducing humanitarian assistance does not eliminate associated needs.

The UN is currently seeking $45 billion to aid 185 million individuals facing conflict and hunger in 2025. However, only 5% of the required funds have been secured to date, highlighting the critical importance of sustained international support.

Cuts in US aid have also affected vital HIV vaccine trials in South Africa, underscoring the far-reaching consequences of these decisions on global health initiatives.
