The United States has expelled more than 200 suspected members of a Venezuelan gang, Tren de Aragua, to El Salvador by utilizing a rarely used wartime law. This move went ahead despite a temporary suspension on deportations ordered by a federal judge. Salvadorean President Nayib Bukele confirmed the arrival of the deportees, including 23 members of the MS-13 gang. The US Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged the deportations and thanked President Bukele for his role in the transfer. American President Donald Trump invoked the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to sidestep normal immigration procedures for the expulsion. The Venezuelan government criticized Trump’s action as an “anachronistic law” violating human rights and likening it to past atrocities. The deportees were reportedly taken to El Salvador’s maximum-security Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT), but it is unclear what charges they will face and whether minors are among them.
