United States intends to cancel visa for Colombian left-wing leader – DW – September 27, 2025

On Friday, the US Department of State announced its decision to revoke the US visa of Colombian President Gustavo Petro, a left-wing politician, due to what they described as his “reckless and incendiary actions.” The statement followed Petro’s controversial remarks in New York City, where he was attending the United Nations General Assembly. He urged US soldiers to disobey President Trump and follow “the orders of humanity.”

These comments came after Petro strongly criticized the Trump administration’s strikes on suspected drug-trafficking Venezuelan boats in the Caribbean Sea during his UN speech, suggesting that Trump should face criminal proceedings over the incidents.

Tensions have escalated over several issues, including Colombia’s deportation of migrants and Petro’s criticism of Israel’s military actions, which aligns him with positions opposite to the Trump administration’s views. Earlier this year, the Trump administration retaliated with visa revocations and tariffs on Colombia, a significant coffee producer, over its refusal to allow US military planes carrying deported migrants to land. This dispute was eventually resolved when Colombia agreed to accept back its citizens, leading to the cancellation of the punitive measures by Trump.
