The US House of Representatives, controlled by Republicans, approved President Donald Trump’s proposal to terminate $9 billion in funding for international assistance and public broadcasting during the early hours of Friday.
House Speaker Mike Johnson stated shortly after the vote, “President Trump and House Republicans committed to fiscal responsibility and increasing government effectiveness,” underscoring that “we are keeping our promise today.”
These reductions in spending represent just a portion of the estimated $3 trillion that Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” is projected to contribute to the national debt.
The measure to cut funding was supported by a majority vote of 216 to 213.
However, two Republicans, including Representatives Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and Mike Turner of Ohio, along with Democratic lawmakers, opposed the cuts.
