US President Donald Trump has fired the director of the National Security Agency (NSA) and the head of the Pentagon’s Cyber Command, General Tim Haugh, according to US officials and members of Congress. Senior military leaders were informed on Thursday about the termination of Haugh, but no reason was given for the decision by the White House or the Pentagon.
Earlier reports had suggested that about six National Security Council staffers were fired and others reassigned after a meeting between Trump and far-right activist Laura Loomer. Loomer accused Haugh of having ties with retired Army general and Trump critic Mark Milley, a claim for which no evidence was provided. Milley served as Trump’s top military adviser and later had a falling-out with the president.
Loomer also argued that all appointees from the Obama and Biden administrations in the intelligence sector lacked integrity and moral clarity, and called for their dismissal. Democrats, including Senator Jack Reed and Senator Mark Warner, expressed outrage over Haugh’s dismissal. They criticized Trump for allowing a far-right conspiracy theorist to influence the decision and for not firing individuals involved in a security breach concerning a Signal group chat about Yemen air strikes.
Since taking office, Trump has overseen significant changes in the leadership of the US armed forces.
