The city of Venice has reintroduced a fee for day tourists visiting the Italian city after a pause. Initially launched in 2024, the “Access Fee” requires visitors to pay €5 ($5.69), but those making last-minute arrangements will have to pay double the entry fee.
For individuals who make the payment within three days before their visit, the amount is increased to €10.00. According to the Venice municipality’s website, this move is aimed at managing mass tourism in the city, which has been plagued by overcrowding in the past. The entry fee is seen as a measure to control the influx of tourists.
Fees for entry will be enforced daily until the first weekend of May and then on weekends from Friday to Sunday until the end of July. This innovative approach makes Venice the first city in the world to charge an admission fee for short-term visitors, similar to that of a museum.
