European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Friday, aiming to strengthen economic ties between the two regions. This visit comes as the EU is working to establish a free trade agreement with India, in anticipation of potential US tariffs. The EU has been intensifying its efforts to boost economic cooperation and explore opportunities in the face of increasing global competition. Von der Leyen emphasized the significance of the EU and India’s partnership in the modern world and called for cooperation to address issues like supply chain diversification and the need to “de-risk” relations with China. India and the EU have long sought to negotiate a free trade deal, with the next round of negotiations scheduled for March. However, previous talks have faced obstacles such as disagreements over intellectual property protections and market access for certain products. Despite these challenges, India recently signed a trade agreement with the European Free Trade Association.
