Firefighters are working to combat wildfires in Germany’s western state of North Rhine-Westphalia. One large-scale operation is ongoing in Sundern, where a fire spans across an area of 20,000 square meters and is currently under control. Another blaze is raging in Simmerath, near Aachen, where forces are hindered by high winds. Fires have also been reported in Overath and Wuppertal. The dry early spring in Germany has increased the risk of forest fires, with March seeing 70% less rain compared to previous years. The lack of rainfall is also affecting crops, animal populations and shipping on the Rhine River.
