The head of Bangladesh’s interim government, Muhammad Yunus, met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Friday, marking Yunus’ first bilateral state visit since taking office in August following the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Hasina stepped down and fled to India amid a student-led uprising against her rule. Since then, Bangladesh has experienced political instability, with strained relations between Bangladesh and India presenting an opportunity for China to strengthen ties with Dhaka. China is Bangladesh’s largest trading partner and a major investor, and the country plays a crucial role in China’s Belt and Road Initiative, aimed at enhancing China’s economic and political influence. The Bangladeshi government expects to sign several agreements with China during Yunus’ visit, focusing on economic and technical assistance, cultural and sports cooperation, and media collaboration.
