Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was expected to travel to Washington on Friday to sign a deal, which would see Kyiv transfer billions of dollars worth of mineral wealth to the United States.

The agreement is part of President Donald Trump’s plan to end the ongoing conflict with Russia and recover some of the billions of dollars spent on military, financial, and humanitarian aid to Ukraine since its invasion by Russia in February 2022.

Zelenskyy hopes this accord will encourage Trump to continue supporting Ukraine’s efforts to recapture territories taken by Moscow.

Zelenskyy’s visit to the White House, his first since Trump’s return to power, comes shortly after diplomatic visits by French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, as European powers aim to understand the United States’ new, unpredictable foreign policy.
