French Military’s Cyber Warfare Preparation on a Naval Vessel

This year, the nation’s largest cyber defense drill will involve 15,000 military personnel, aiming to enhance preparedness against real-world threats. A singular infected USB drive could disable a French warship’s missile system, illustrating the gravity of potential cyber attacks. Fortunately, this scenario is part of an exercise conducted at a naval base in Toulon, southern France. From now until March 28, military personnel will participate in the DEFNET drill, which utilizes real-world scenarios, including those inspired by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, where digital warfare has been crucial. Cyber defense specialists, like Principal Master Antoine of the French Navy, practice identifying the origins of viruses to strengthen defenses. This drill is essential for preparing the army for cyber attacks, including those at sea, requiring quick responses to maintain operational capabilities. Despite having 4,000 cyber warfare officers, the military plans to increase this number to 5,000 by 2030 due to the growing cyber threat. Additionally, a similar exercise will be conducted in Tallinn, Estonia, in May, bringing together NATO allies for a joint cyber defense test.
