A group of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are actively working to prevent Hungary’s Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, from gaining access to restricted European Union (EU) funds in the wake of the Midterm Review of the EU’s Cohesion Funds. This review’s purpose is to rearrange unutilized funds for defense and dual-use goods, along with accelerating the expenditure of funds in the latter half of the EU’s seven-year financial period.
According to MEPs, the Hungarian government might succeed in unblocking previously restricted funds without adhering to the EU’s conditions concerning academic freedom or Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex (LGBTI) rights, using the reallocation to their advantage.
